A Sport Mod car may compete only in the Sport Mod division and may not also compete in the Modified division or another class during the same event.
Weight Requirements
Open-engine cars must weigh at least 2,500 pounds with the driver after the race.
Cars using an approved GM 602 crate engine receive a 150-pound weight reduction and must weigh at least 2,350 pounds with the driver.
Added ballast must be securely attached to the frame or roll cage with approved hardware. All ballast must be painted white and marked with the car number. Weight may not be placed inside the driver’s compartment, outside the body, above the interior sheet metal, or in other prohibited locations.
At least the top five finishers must report directly to the scales after each race. Cars that do not report immediately or fail to meet minimum weight may be disqualified and lose points and prize money.
Engine Options
Two engine configurations are permitted:
Open Engine
Approved open engines include certain OEM-style Chevrolet, Ford, and Mopar small-block engines. The maximum displacement is 390 cubic inches.
Open engines must use approved OEM-style steel blocks and cylinder heads. Performance blocks, 400 Chevrolet blocks, canted-valve heads, porting, gasket matching, roller camshafts, gas-ported pistons, and other prohibited modifications are not allowed.
Engines must maintain a maximum cranking compression of 175 pounds with no tolerance.
GM 602 Crate Engine
An unaltered GM Performance Parts 602 crate engine is permitted. The engine must remain within the published factory specifications and retain its approved factory or recognized replacement seals.
Approved replacement sealing systems may include RACE 1, Ingram Engines, Rush, Race City, or DIRTcar seals when accompanied by the required documentation.
Tampering with engine seals or internal components may result in disqualification, suspension, loss of points, engine confiscation, or additional penalties.
Carburetors and Fuel System
Open engines must use an approved Holley 4412 500 CFM two-barrel carburetor. Holley XP carburetors are prohibited.
Approved 602 crate engines may use certain listed Holley 650 CFM four-barrel carburetors or the approved Holley 4412 two-barrel carburetor.
Carburetors must remain stock except for specifically permitted adjustments, including the removal of the choke plate and changes to jets, power valves, and accelerator pumps. Super Sucker-style spacers and unauthorized carburetor modifications are prohibited.
Two throttle-return springs are required. Only OEM-style mechanical fuel pumps mounted in the stock location are allowed. Electric and belt-driven fuel pumps are prohibited.
Gasoline, race gas, and E85 are permitted. Alcohol, nitrous oxide, and fuel additives are prohibited.
Ignition and RPM Limit
Approved MSD or OEM-style HEI ignition systems may be used. All engines must operate with an approved 6,500 RPM rev limiter.
The rev limiter must be mounted outside the driver’s reach and properly sealed. Tampering with the rev limiter, ignition box, chip, wiring, or adjustment controls may result in disqualification and suspension.
Traction-control devices, data-recording systems, driver-controlled ignition timing, and electronically controlled fuel-delivery systems are strictly prohibited. A driver found using traction control may be suspended for one year.
Drivetrain
Steel or carbon-fiber driveshafts are permitted. Steel driveshafts must be painted white, and an approved driveshaft loop is mandatory.
Approved manual, automatic, and recognized aftermarket racing transmissions may be used. The transmission must have operational forward and reverse gears.
In-and-out boxes and quick-change transmissions are prohibited. Cars using a full-size clutch must have an explosion-proof steel bellhousing.
Suspension and Steering
Front suspension and steering components must generally remain OEM-style and in the stock location unless otherwise permitted.
Approved tubular upper and lower control arms may be used within the limitations of the complete rules. Rack-and-pinion steering and center steering are prohibited. Steering must remain on the left side of the car.
Only one spring and one shock per wheel are permitted. Dummy shocks are counted as shocks, and no more than four shocks may be installed on the car.
Coil springs must meet the required diameter, construction, mounting, and linear-rate specifications. Air springs, adjustable helix devices, hydraulic weight jackers, electric weight jackers, and other prohibited suspension devices are not allowed.
Shock Rules
Only approved steel, smooth-body, non-adjustable shocks are permitted.
Schrader valves, remote reservoirs, external adjusters, bump stops, bulb-style bodies, universal fill ports, and front coil-over shocks are prohibited.
Eligible drivers may claim one shock from a top-three finishing car under the procedures and payment requirements listed in the complete rulebook. Refusing a valid claim may result in disqualification.
Rear End and Brakes
Passenger-car, truck-style, and approved steel-tube quick-change rear ends are permitted. Steel axle tubes are required.
Aluminum or split birdcages are prohibited. Only one birdcage per side is allowed, and all mounts must be securely welded or bolted to function as a single assembly.
Cars must have an operational brake caliper and vented rotor on all four wheels. All four wheels must lock during inspection. Brake floaters, carbon-fiber rotors, solid rotors, excessively lightened components, and unauthorized modifications are prohibited.
Tires and Wheels
Approved tires include:
- Hoosier M-30S
- Hoosier M-60 for the right rear
- Optional Hoosier G60 tires
An M-60 or G60 tire must be used on the right rear. Approved tire sizes are listed in the complete rulebook, with a maximum tire width of nine inches.
Grooving and siping are permitted. Chemical treatment, softening, conditioning, or any alteration that changes the factory tire compound is prohibited.
Only eight-inch steel wheels are allowed, with a one-inch allowance for beadlocks. Beadlocks are permitted on the right-side wheels only.
Fuel Cell, Bumpers and Body
The fuel cell must be mounted securely behind the rear axle, enclosed in a steel container, protected by approved tubing, and secured with proper steel straps. The maximum capacity is 32 gallons.
Fuel pickups must be located at the top of the cell. Bottom-feed fuel pickups are prohibited unless permanently plugged and properly covered.
Front and rear steel bumpers are required. Side nerf bars and bumpers may not extend beyond the rear tires or contain sharp edges.
Rear spoilers are not permitted.
Unless specifically modified by the USMPA rules, the chassis and body must meet the current UMP/DIRTcar Modified specifications.
Required Safety Equipment
Drivers must use an approved Snell SA2010 or SA2015 helmet and an SFI 3.2A/5 or higher fire suit.
Fire-resistant gloves are mandatory, and fire-resistant racing shoes are strongly recommended.
Competition-style lap, shoulder, and anti-submarine belts are required. Belts must have metal-to-metal buckles and may not be more than three years old based on the manufacturer’s date.
A neck brace is mandatory unless the driver uses an approved HANS-style restraint. Window nets are required for drivers under 18 and strongly recommended for all competitors.
A DOT/SFI-approved onboard fire-suppression system is highly recommended. Cars without an onboard system must carry a securely mounted fire extinguisher weighing at least two pounds.
A clearly marked and accessible electrical kill switch is required. Batteries must be securely mounted outside the driver’s compartment.
Radios and Car Identification
Two-way radio communication is prohibited. Raceceivers are permitted and may be required by the track.
Car numbers must be displayed on both sides and the roof. The main numbers must be at least 18 inches tall and nine inches wide. A smaller number must also appear on the nose and fuel-cell area.
Cars must display the official USMPA decals in the required locations.
Claims, Protests and Penalties
The USMPA rule package includes claims for carburetors and shocks, along with tire-testing procedures.
Claim and protest fees include:
- Two-barrel carburetor: $575
- Four-barrel carburetor: $775
- Tire protest: $125
- Shock claim: as established in the complete rules
Claims must be made by an eligible lead-lap driver and completed according to the procedures and deadlines in the full rulebook.
Refusing a valid claim, refusing inspection, using chemically treated tires, tampering with engine seals, exceeding the RPM limit, or using traction control may result in disqualification, loss of points and prize money, suspension, fines, or confiscation of illegal components.

Radios and other electronic communication devices are prohibited, except for the mandatory race receiver used by track officials.
Respectful conduct is required from drivers, parents, guardians, and crew members. Arguing with officials, fighting, entering another competitor’s pit to confront them, negative social-media activity, alcohol in the Mini-Wedge pit area, or other unsportsmanlike behavior may result in disqualification or suspension. Scoring, safety, technical, and competition decisions made by track and WRA officials are final.
All competitors are responsible for reading and understanding the complete 2026 Wedge Racing Association rulebook before participating. This summary is provided for convenience only. In the event of a conflict, the complete WRA rules and the decisions of Elkins Speedway and WRA officials will apply.
